President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear President Bush,
We, the undersigned, urge you to support the Syria Accountability and
Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003.
Mr. President, we appeal to you to support this bill because Syria is
the world's number one sponsor of terrorism, because Syria possesses
a large array of weapons of mass destruction, and because Syria is
occupying Lebanon and poses a threat to the United States goal of
establishing Democracy in Iraq and the region.
Over 11 terrorist groups (all of which are classified as such by the
U.S. Government)
are headquartered in Damascus. In addition, the terrorist group
Hezbollah, which is responsible for taking hundreds of American
lives, is under the direct operational control of Syria.
Syria's long-standing chemical and biological weapons programs are
well documented and beyond dispute. If suspicions are true that
Saddam's chemical and biological weapons were transferred to Syria,
such weapons would only be a welcome addition to Syria's already
impressive pre-existing stockpiles.
Further, Syria has been illegally occupying once-democratic Lebanon
for 27 years, has overthrown Lebanon's legitimate government, and has
turned Lebanon into a police state where basic freedoms are under
constant assault. Lebanon's experience, as well as Syria's recent
hostile acts against Coalition forces in Iraq, demonstrate that Syria
cannot tolerate democracies on its borders and intends to destabilize
post-war Iraq. As Bashar Assad himself said, the Syrian-assisted
Iraqi resistance against the Coalition would "achieve nothing short
of what the resistance did against the Israeli occupation of south
Lebanon."
We fully support the War on Terrorism, and we have utmost faith in
your political and moral leadership. Syria, the leading sponsor of
terrorism and a dangerous enemy of the U.S., must not be permitted to
slip through the cracks in exchange for any amount of intelligence,
assistance, or promises of future action. We feel that terrorism is
terrorism, and to give Syria a "free pass" while simultaneously
holding al-Qaeda and Iraq accountable would be a deathknell
to the War on Terrorism, would destabilize the new Iraq and would
undermine the moral authority of the presidency.
As you so clearly stated, "You are either with us, or you are with
the terrorists." Mr. President, Syria clearly chose the side of the
terrorists many decades ago, and it is time to hold them accountable.
The Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act
does just that--imposing sanctions on Syria until they end their
support for terrorism, stop developing weapons of mass destruction,
halt their illegal importation of Iraqi oil, and end their illegal
occupation of Lebanon.
Mr. President, this bill is good for America, and good for the cause
of freedom and democracy everywhere. Thank you for your consideration.
